Stephen Fry – Coming to the iPad Soon!

So far as this site is concerned, – we have plans to develop and enhance. In a few weeks we launch an iPad app on which you can read blogs, blessays, microblogs and other pieces of writing that I publish to this site. We’re testing it at this moment and I’m very pleased with the smooth flow and finish of it.

Now that’s very some very good news.  Stephen Fry is an excellent novelist, essay (or blessay) writer, comedian, sitcom writer, and just all-round brilliant person.  A ‘ridiculously multi-faceted’  (to borrow a phrase from Jeff Van Gundy when describing Pau Gasol last night) bloke – and also a huge gadget and techie geek who writes wonderful, in-depth articles on many mobile devices.

I can’t wait to see his iPad app.

Apple Posts New Support Doc for iPad 3G Data Plan Setup

Data plan setup on 3G iPad

Apple has posted a new support document that gives a walk-through of how to setup data plans on the iPad WiFi + 3G models.  The document’s catchy little title is AT&T: How to set up a new Cellular Data account on iPad Wi-Fi + 3G.

The process looks relatively painless and quick – choosing from the two flavors of plan (250MB or Unlimited), providing a very limited amount of personal information and payment method details.  That seems to be about it.

You can find the Apple document here for the full walk-through:

iPad App Store Adds Sort by Release Date

App Store sort by release date

The iPad App Store has been updated, and has added the ability to sort by the Release Date for apps.  This is a small but very cool addition – as it makes it much easier to see new apps as they come in – although it’s brand new so I’m not sure how often it gets updated (hopefully daily or more).

To see apps sorted by release date, go to the Features section of the App Store and you’ll see it as the third tab on the right at the top of the screen (alongside New and What’s Hot).

Update: As Andrew has kindly pointed out in the comments, you can also sort by release date within categories.  It is the second tab at the top of the screen within category sections. Very cool.

Recommended: Macgirl’s First Look at DODOcase for iPad

I always enjoy Macgirl’s reviews, especially those covering cases and accessories.  Today she has a very good first look (full review coming later) of the DODOcase for iPad.

The DODOcase looks slim and attractive, and makes the iPad look very much like a moleskine notebook while inside it. Macgirl seems pleased with her case so far.  If you’ve been considering the DODOcase or are just looking for a good iPad case generally, check out the short Intro video above and her thoughts on it here when you get a chance:

Desktop App = A Little Bit of ‘Multitasking’ on the iPad

Desktop iPad app

New Desktop app lets you ‘multitask’ on the iPad

OK, so this is not real multitasking.  Let’s get that out of the way right off.  The new Desktop app for the iPad does not suddenly make it possible to run multiple apps at once on the iPad.  But … it does let you use a series of useful widgets within the app itself that will allow you to multitask while using it.

So, for example, you can have a Maps widget open at the same time as a Calculator widget when trying to calculate a journey time. Or have a browser widget open at the same time as one for composing a new email, and copy and paste between the two and send a mail without leaving the app.

AT&T – Details on iPad 3G Data Plans

AT&T has put out a PDF document outlining details of its data plan pricing for the iPad WiFi + 3G.

There’s not much that we didn’t already know in the document, but one point Gizmodo picked up on is that you’ll have free access to AT&T’s 20,000 plus WiFI hotspots while you’ve got a data plan active.

Spirit Jailbreak for iPad Coming Soon, Possibly Tomorrow

A new jailbreak for the iPad (as well as the iPhone) called Spirit is said to be coming very soon, possibly as soon as tomorrow.

There is confusion as to just how soon it will be released.  I’ve seen at least one report that it’s coming tomorrow (Friday 4/30), but a couple of the folks working on it seem to have different views on whether it will be ready for Friday.  One of the developers of it – @comex on Twitter – answered ‘Friday’ when asked by a user when it would be released.  Another of the devs – chpwn – has labeled that ‘very optimistic’ in an IRC chat with the folks at iHackintosh.

In any case, this jailbreak for iPad looks to be out very soon, and will be the first iPad jailbreak.

3G iPads Shipping for Friday Delivery

Lots of reports on the web today of shipping confirmations for iPad WiFi + 3G models, for their promised delivery dates of this Friday, April 30, presumably.

Apple stores and Best Buy and other chosen outlets should have them in stock on Friday – starting at 5:00Pm I think – as well.

I am still thinking on whether I can swing a trade-up to a 3G model.  I’d have to sacrifice storage space though – drop down from 64GB to 32GB.  Will be mulling that over for a while longer.

So … any of you awaiting a Friday delivery of an iPad 3G?  Or planning to go get one at a local store?
