iBooks App on iPad – Some New Things We’ve Learned About It

iBooksMainAs pre-orders for the iPad went live yesterday, Apple also revealed a lot more information about the ‘magical, revolutionary’ device, from more tech specs to more details about the not quite built-in (but available free in the App Store) iBooks app.

iBooks will double as an ebook reader app and bookstore for acquiring ebooks.  One of the most notable new bits of detail on iBooks is that it will let you add ePub titles not acquired via its own store as well:

The iBooks app uses the ePub format — the most popular open book format in the world. That makes it easy for publishers to create iBooks versions of your favorite reads. And you can add free ePub titles to iTunes and sync them to the iBooks app on your iPad.

Wow.  It seems the iPad may have some consumer appeal after all – despite those surveys saying nobody except Norwegians was interested in buying it.

Some impressive (reported) numbers floating around about the first day of pre-orders and in-store collection reservations:

— Over 50,000 pre-orders in a two hour period

— Over 90,000 pre-orders after six hours

— Over 40,000 in-store pickup reservations

Countdown to iPad – Get in line (Use Case 26)

iPad: time management well in hand.
iPad: time management well in hand.
A thread in Google Answers claims the average person “spends an estimated 45 to 62 minutes waiting everyday. That’s about 3 years in a 70 year lifetime. ” Though I can’t confirm the precise number, that seems to be the way my day goes. Continue reading

iPad Has an External Button for Screen Rotation Lock

The iPad has an external button for screen rotation lock – just above the Volume up/down controls. This is one of quite a few interesting new things we learned yesterday about the iPad, as Apple revealed more about the device when pre-orders went live.

It’s a very handy addition that should make for much more comfortable reading and help gamers out a fair bit as well.

Were any of you hoping for any other new buttons on the iPad?

My New iPad – Reserved at My Local Apple Store

I’ve got my iPad reserved, to pickup at my closest Apple store (about 5 miles away) on the April 3rd launch day.  I’ve been told by an Apple phone sales rep that this can only be done online, not in the physical stores themselves – and that’s how I got it done this morning, via the link mentioned in my earlier post.

There’s a lot of confusion this morning about whether reserving an iPad at a local store this way means you are * guaranteed * to get one on April 3rd or not.  I’ve seen people on Twitter and forums saying they’ve been told it is not guaranteed.

To my mind, the wording of the reservation form, and of the emailed confirmation I received, clearly say this is a definite, not a maybe.  The only qualifier I see to that is that you must show up at your chosen store by 3 p.m. on April 3rd.  So if your local store is going to be crazy on the day, some camping out / lining up may be required.  I can live with that. iPad – come to papa. :)

You Can Reserve an iPad to Pickup at Local Apple Store – Here’s Where To Go

Aha.  This is what I am wanting to do – reserve and pickup an iPad at my local Apple store.  I’m not even sure how / why I stumbled across this, but here is where you go to get to it:

It’s a link off the Notify Me page for the iPad.

Right now, unfortunately, it is not fully working – at least for Texas.  It lets me choose the state of Texas, but then will not fill in anything in the drop-down where you should be able to select your desired store location.  If I click the link to go to the store locator page, that works fine and shows me my nearest local store, but will not let me do anything / proceed with it.

I’ve reported this to Apple via their sales line, but so far they are just advising that their servers are slammed and to try again in a couple hours.  I also asked whether you can do this reserving in the physical store nearest you and was told no you cannot, this can be done online only.

Let us know in the comments if you get different results.

UPDATE: This is working fine, just not in my Chrome browser.  I switched over to Safari and got my reservation done.

iPad Pre-orders Live Now at Apple Store

Just as expected, iPad pre-ordering has gone live this morning at Apple’s online store.

You can now go to (in the US) and …

— Pre-order any of the WiFi models for delivery April 3rd (or April 5th if your area does not have Saturday delivery available)

— Pre-order any of the WiFi + 3G models for delivery in late April

— Pre-order most of the Apple iPad accessories (with varying delivery dates)

I’ve opted to skip pre-ordering for now, as I still don’t feel good about the Saturday delivery piece of it.  Hoping to find out what’s possible with reserving at a local Apple store later this morning.

Countdown to iPad – Living GuideBook (Use Case 24)

iPad: Takes you where the red fern grows
iPad: Takes you where the red fern grows

You were going to buy a Kindle, but that geek husband of yours surprised you with an iPad. You love the color pictures and video, but it wasn’t till today’s hike that you really understood the value of his gift. Not only were you able to read about the lake trail, but iPad’s GPS got you right to the trail head. Having downloaded “Living Trail Guide,” then checking the weather and time of sunset, you knew it would be good hike and you’d be back by dark. All this and your husband never had to stop for directions! You couldn’t have done this with a Kindle – he may never let you live it down.

iPad – It’s alive!

Time to Decide on Which iPad to Order

iPad pricing

Well, tomorrow is when iPad pre-orders start.  So I’ve been staring at the iPad pricing page and trying to work out which model I want to order tomorrow – always assuming pre-order can be done with guaranteed pickup at a local Apple store on April 3rd; if it is home delivery promised on a Saturday I’ll pass on pre-order and go stand at a store for one.

I’m pretty sure now that I’m going to go for the 64GB WiFi model.  I’m sure about the WiFi model, as they’re available on Day 1 and I just won’t wait a few weeks more for the 3G model.
