This week’s pick is Sound Uncovered by Exploratorium. This is a very unique and original app presented as an interactive book that explores ‘the surprising side of sound’. Here’s a little slice of its App Store intro:

.. this app puts you at the center of the experiment: Hear with your eyes, see with your ears, make and modify recordings, test your hearing, and more.
How do you make a saxophone growl? Are there secret messages in music played backward? Can you talk and listen at the same time? Why does the sound of gum chewing drive some people mad?

This week’s pick is izik – a fresh new visual search app that’s optimized for the iPad’s swipes, taps, and gestures. It’s powered by the ‘spam-free’ Blekko search engine and is touted as the first search engine that’s optimized for tablets.

In addition to being very touch friendly, izik also offers very visual and image-rich results to searches. Initial results don’t come up as quickly as they do in Google powered search in Safari, but once the page is loaded it’s quick and easy to get around and choose which results you’d like to look at.

Aweditorium iPad app

Who doesn’t like free? And who doesn’t like great iPad apps? When the two come together it’s good stuff. With that in mind, we’d like to share our Best Free iPad App of the Week here every weekend.

Aweditorium is a superb music discovery – and just plain music enjoyment – app for the iPad. It’s easily the best source for discovering new music and new artists that I’ve found. I’ve discovered more new stuff that I like (and I’ve subsequently bought) through Aweditorium than through any of the major music discovery services like Pandora and Last.fm and the like.

It presents you with a grid of small thumbnails, with each representing a track from a band or artist. You tap on one and that track will be featured full screen – along with background info on the band, lyrics of the song, and buttons to share the track, see more by this artist, see YouTube video of them, and return to the main grid.
