Facebook for iPad has finally been released, and is available in the App Store now.
The iPhone version of the app has been updated to be a universal app, with full iPad support.
We’ve known this was coming for months now – after the ‘hidden’ version was found hiding in plain sight – but it still seems exciting to see it finally hit the App Store.
Here’s the quick list of Facebook for iPad features posted at the App Store page under update details:
With high-res photos, games, chat and more, now you can get the best of Facebook—on your iPad.
– Enjoy bigger, better photos: Your photos are high-res and easy to flip through, like a real photo album

According to a report by Ben Parr at Mashable the ‘now you see it, now you don’t’ Facebook iPad app will be launched at Apple’s just-announced iPhone 5 event next Tuesday.
We learned two months ago that code for the Facebook iPad app had been hiding in plain sight within their iPhone app. For a brief time we were even able to run the iPad app, and it looked pretty darn good.
It seems the Facebook for iPad app has been ready to go, or very nearly so, for months now – and has only been held up due to ongoing negotiations (or possibly rows) between Facebook and Apple – about Facebook integration into iOS and other subjects.
I’d love to say I’m fed up with all the rumors about the Facebook iPad app and I don’t care when it comes out – but the truth is I use Facebook a lot more often lately and though I like the Friended app quite a bit, I’m pretty sure Facebook’s own effort will be the best way to use the network once it does get released.
I will say though that I’m definitely not holding my breath on Facebook for iPad announcement next Tuesday – as there have just been way too many false starts for this one already.
Yesterday I posted about the discovery of the Facebook iPad app, hidden right within the code for their iPhone app – and about how you could take some easy steps to start using Facebook for iPad right away.
It seems Facebook was none too pleased with the ‘unofficial’ access to their not-yet-released iPad app, and as of yesterday afternoon they blocked access to those using it. Bummer.
If you’ve got a jailbroken iPad though, there’s a new tweak out – from the excellent jailbreak dev, chpwn – that makes the Facebook iPad app work again. It’s called FaceForward, it’s free, and you can find it in Cydia now.
Happy Outlaw Facebooking. :)
Facebook for iPad has been the single biggest ‘missing’ app ever since the iPad launched last year. They’ve had an iPhone app available since the day the App Store launched, but iPad Faecbook fans have so far been left hanging. Now it looks like that may soon change – as TechCrunch has reported on a near final looking version of Facebook for iPad hiding in plain sight, in the code for the existing iPhone app.
TechCrunch’s MG Siegler has a great article up on the discovery and his testing of the app.
So that’s the first bit of good news – that it looks like we may see Facebook’s iPad app very soon. The even better news? You can run this app right now on the iPad with a little effort!
I used these easy instructions from Flo’s Weblog to get it going on my iPad 2 this morning – and the app really looks great.
I’ve been watching the Facebook Live event this afternoon, with Mark Zuckerberg talking about some ‘big news’ for Facebook and chat. Built-in video chat via Skype was announced, as many expected.
The other big news from the event is no news on a Facebook iPad app. It didn’t even get a mention, though Zuckerberg did say they’ve been ‘buy building stuff’ for around 6 months now and that over the next few weeks and months they’ve got a number of things to announce and launch.
I’m sure this will disappoint a lot of iPad-owning Facebook fans. Until Facebook does decide to release an official app for iPad, we’ll need to keep using either Facebook in the Safari browser or one of the various 3rd party Facebook apps available in the iPad App Store.
My current – and fairly long-standing – favorite Facebook app for the iPad is Friended. What’s yours?
According to recent reports in The New York Times and elsewhere, Facebook are in the final stages of working on a Facebook for iPad – and it should be released ‘in the coming weeks’.
For many Facebook fans this rumor will have just one word springing to mind: Finally. Facebook had an official iPhone app on Day 1 of the App Store. It was one of the first native apps shown off by Apple and proved to be a hugely popular and critically acclaimed iPhone app as well.
So it’s been a little bit of a shock to find that there’s still no official Facebook app for the iPad over a year after it was launched. Sure, you can access Facebook via the Safari browser and via several 3rd party apps, but many iPad users have still been chomping at the bit to see an official app from Facebook themselves. Now they may not have much longer to wait.
Facebook for iPad will reportedly include everything that the website offers and also some iPad app exclusive features, including the ability to upload pictures and videos.
I’ve never been a big Facebook user but I do find myself using it more often recently, and the Friended app has served me very well on the iPad. What’s your favorite way to use Facebook on the iPad? Do you think you’ll immediately switch to an official Facebook app if one comes out in the next few weeks?
