On the Eve of The Premier League Kickoff, Here’s My Favorite Football Game for the iPad

The Premier League kicks off tomorrow and I’ll soon be watching EPL and Champions League matches. Hurrah for that. In the meantime, I’ve got my favorite football (oh, soccer if you must) app for iPad to keep me occupied.

That would be Football Manager Handheld 2011 – the epic football management game brought to the iPad. It’s not as big and in-depth as the versions for PC, but it’s an excellent iPad version that I have spent many hours with over recent months.

If you’ve ever played Championship Manager or Football Manager on the PC, or just generally fancy having a crack at managing Barcelona or taking Leeds back into the Premiership, then this is a game you’ll love.

Oh, and yes that is a screencap from my current gig as Manchester City manager. I’m not a City fan as it goes, but all that transfer money, I just had to see what I can do with it.

Price Drops: Football Manager Handheld 2011 for iPad on Sale at $4.99

Football Manager Handheld 2011 – the excellent iPad version of the hugely popular football (soccer) management game – is on sale at 50% off. The game normally sells for $9.99 and is now at just $4.99 as part of a big, limited time summer sale from Sega.

I’ve been a huge (obsessed really) fan of Football Manager (and before it Championship Manager) for many years. This iPad version is a superb quick-play version of the game. I’ve played multiple seasons in the game, and though it’s not quite as in-depth as the desktop version, it’s more than close enough for me – and easy to pickup and play for short or long bursts on the iPad.

If you’re a fan of football manager games, this is a good time to pickup the best one for the iPad at a knockdown price.

Oh Yes, My Job as a Football Manager on the iPad Is Going Well

Ever since Football Manager Handheld 2011 was updated to run on the iPad a little over a month ago, I’ve been spending a lot of time with the game – and enjoying the heck out of it.

And my ‘night job’ as the manager of Arsenal in the English Premier League is off to a very good start. In my first season in charge, we finished a close second in the league, just below Liverpool and ahead of Man United. Net transfer spend for that season was zero as well, with 12 million spent, and 12 million brought back in through player sales.

I’m about a third of the way through my second season and sitting top of the table with a game in hand and a 4-0 thrashing of United at Old Trafford amongst the early season results.

When I first started playing the game I found myself missing a few of the more in-depth features that are in the PC version of the game. After just a short while those feelings went away. I’ve discovered that the game strikes a very good balance in including enough features to make the game as compelling as ever, while keeping it simple enough to be an easy ‘pick up and play’ option that you can dive into for a quick 5 minutes of play or a stretch of a couple hours.

This is now easily my favorite iPad game, and my number one diversion on the iPad.

UPDATE: While replying to Ivan in the comments, I just realized the perfect way to describe the stage I’ve reached in my enjoyment of this game: the ‘contemplating next moves in the transfer market while walking the dog’ stage. Yeah, that’s about where I’m at. :)
