The mophie workbook is a ‘protective smartcase’ for the iPad 2. Made by mophie – who I’ve known best for their excellent line of Juice Pack Air rechargeable battery cases for the iPhone.
Although my favorite ‘outfit’ for the iPad 2 is the Apple smart cover and a slim skin on the back, I also like to have at least a couple of good options around for a full-protection case for my iPad 2.
This mophie case seemed a good candidate for the full-protection case role, and I’ve been trying one out for the past several weeks.
I’ve seen and used a number of good iPad and iPad 2 cases. Some are slim and sleek, some are a little less so but offer strong, full protection. What I hadn’t yet seen prior to this week is an iPad case that is 100% unique, a one of a kind like the iPad Book Case I received from the kind folks at ReAuthored.
It’s called a Book Case, and is a real one-of-a-kind case, because it is actually a genuine recycled book. Mine is portfolio of cartoons from the Wall Street Journal published in 1972. These cases are also custom, handcrafted efforts made here in the USA – another nice attribute right off the bat. I’ve been using mine with my iPad 2 all week and of course I’ve got some thoughts and photos to share …
The iPad 2 Book Case from ReAuthored is a great concept. It combines good looks, a secure housing for the iPad, and a heck of a good re-use of discarded old books.
It might even reduce the risk of having an iPad stolen, as it makes it look like an old book instead of an expensive tablet device. These cases are handcrafted with these materials:
- Book: Discarded Book of Varying Title
- Exterior Cover: Heavy Jacquard or Original Book Binding
- Interior Cover: Heavy Jacquard
- Elastic Closure: Professional Woven Elastic
They’re compatible with both the original iPad and the iPad 2 and they go for $39. For more info and to place an order visit the ReAuthored site: http://www.reauthored.com/products/ipad-2-book-case
The Speck SmartShell Case for iPad 2 is a back cover case designed specifically to work with the Apple Smart Cover for the iPad 2. These cases have an instant appeal for me, because the more time I’ve spent with the iPad 2, the more I’ve come to love the smart cover.
The SmartShell is another ultra-thin, hard case style back cover for the iPad 2, similar to the Incipio SmartFeather for iPad 2 that I reviewed recently. Both of these look to be high quality back cover cases that play very nicely with the iPad 2 smart cover, so I’ve given the SmartShell a try very soon after testing the SmartFeather.
The Incipio Smart Feather for the iPad 2 is meant to be a perfect, ultra-light companion for the iPad 2 using an Apple Smart Cover. I realized some time ago that being compatible with the smart cover is now a must-have feature for me when looking for iPad 2 cases, as I’ve found that I’m a huge fan of the smart cover.
In fact the smart cover is very rarely off my iPad when I’m at home. It is easily the best cover / case I’ve ever used with an iPad, and I’ve been searching for the ideal companion case to use with it for a while now. The Incipio Smart Feather sounded quite promising when I first saw it. Here’s a little bit of its intro at the Incipio site:
The Smart feather® is custom-molded to fit the contours of the iPad 2, ensuring a snug and sturdy hold. With great attention to detail, Incipio® designed strategically-placed custom cutouts in the Smart feather®, allowing the Apple Smart Cover magnets to adhere to the iPad 2 near each of the two side corners.
Sounds great if you’re a fan of using the iPad 2 smart cover right? Unfortunately it hasn’t lived up to my high hopes for it, not by a longhsot.
The STM Skinny is a slim, folio style case for the iPad 2, with support for the smart cover automatic sleep/wake feature. I’ve talked before about how the smart cover tech, and specifically the automatic sleep/wake feature, have become a must-have for me on iPad 2 cases – and this one meets that criteria.
I ordered one of these via Radtech after seeing it mentioned by a reader, and have had it for a couple of weeks now. The short story is that this is not a favorite iPad 2 case for me. For more on why, hit the break …
The SwitchEasy CoverBuddy for iPad 2 is intended to act as a perfect companion for the Apple Smart Cover for the iPad 2. It’s a back cover case that allows a space on the left hand side to let the smart cover do its thing – and comes in a small range of colors that complement the smart cover colors.
This is a solid and very durable back cover that is protected thusly, depending on which model you order:
… with highly durable color matched rubber coating (color version), or scratch-resistant UV coating (clear version) so your purchase will last longer.
I bought a black model that doesn’t quite match my navy blue smart cover, but is close enough for me to be content with it – though ideally at some point it would be good to see the range of colors extended to match those of the iPad 2 smart covers.
If you’re in need of real rugged protection for your iPad 2, then you should be happy to hear that the Otterbox iPad 2 Defender Series case is now available. Otterbox are the masters when it comes to above and beyond, hard as nails protection for iOS (and many other mobile) devices.
The new iPad 2 Defender Series is part of their most rugged line of cases, that are built to withstand ‘just about any environment’. It’s got a shock-absorbing silicone skin and an inner polycarbonate shell with a foam interior that provides scratch protection for the back of the iPad 2. It allows for full access to all the iPad’s functionality while in the case, and has a clip-on cover for the iPad screen that doubles up as fold-out stand. It’s also 20% lighter than the version for the original iPad – which of course goes well with the lighter, thinner iPad 2 itself.
The case offers protection against bumps, shocks, drops, and ‘dust intrusion’; it is not waterproof and does not protect against liquid damage.
I’ve used an Otterbox Defender with my iPhone 4. I found it surprisingly light and also found it surprisingly easy to use the iPhone just like normal while still having such heavy-duty protection. While my iPhone may come along when we’re out on a beach or at the lake, I don’t ever expose my iPad to any higher risk environments – so the Defender Series is not on my list of iPad 2 cases to get.
For those of you who use your iPad 2 in rough work (or play) environments, this is likely to be a very good case option for you to look at. They go for $89.95 and you can check out all the details and place orders at the Otterbox page for the iPad 2 Defender Series.
I spent my first few weeks with the iPad 2 using only the Apple Smart Cover and screen protectors on front and back. Initially there was a major lack of third party cases for the iPad 2 – in Apple and other retail stores and even online. Over the last few weeks this situation has improved a great deal and I’ve found a number of promising iPad 2 cases online.
The Mivizu Sense iPad 2 Leather Case is one of those. I had never heard of Mivizu before until a reader mentioned this case and it looked interesting enough to try out. Honestly, I had low expectations with such an unknown name. Well, I’ve been using this unknown darkhorse of a case for a couple weeks now and I have been very pleasantly surprised at how much I like it.
SwitchEasy’s new CoverBuddy for iPad 2 is a great looking companion case for the iPad 2 Smart Cover.
The new CoverBuddy for iPad 2 is designed specifically to work well in tandem with the Apple iPad 2 smart cover. It
From our speaker grill to our all encompass design, CoverBuddy™ is the case which protects the most area of the back of your iPad 2. In addition, unlike most plain scratch-able cases on the market, CoverBuddy™ is protected with highly durable color matched rubber coating (color version), or scratch-resistant UV coating (clear version) so your purchase will last longer.
I really like the way this case sounds, as I have come to realize that the iPad 2 Smart Cover is by far my favorite case to use with the iPad 2. It’s well-priced too at $24.99
I wish the range of colors on offer for these covered the full set of smart cover colors. I’ve ordered one anyway though, a black one that is not too far off my navy blue smart cover.

I’ve always heard very good things about Piel Frama cases. The Spanish company has a strong reputation for the quality of its leather and cases for iOS devices. A comment earlier today from reader Glenys prompted me to take a look at their site and their iPad 2 offerings.
They have a number of gorgeous looking iPad 2 cases, but the iMagnum (shown above) is the one that really caught my eye. It’s a back-cover case for the iPad 2 that is intended to work with the iPad 2 smart cover. It comes in a range of colors that nicely match those of the Apple smart covers.
The idea of using an iPad 2 case that’s designed to work with the Apple smart cover is growing on me (more on that in a separate post soon) and I placed an order for an iMagnum today.
What do you all think of iPad 2 cases designed to work with the Apple smart cover?
