As we know, the iPad has several amazing apps which help you stay productive, have fun and do a variety of other things. One of the things I have been slightly underwhelmed by is third party hardware support. I’m not talking about simple stuff like bluetooth keyboards, rather hardware that attaches your iPad to other devices.
Celestron have a long and distinguished history manufacturing some of the best telescopes on the market and they have released a piece of hardware called SkyQ, which is essentially a wifi dongle that you can plug into your Celestron ‘goto’ compatible telescope and control it with an app on the iPad. For the uninitiated a ‘goto’ telescope is basically a computer controlled telescope that once aligned, will point automatically to any object in the sky. It’s great for lazy people like me who don’t have the time or brain power to learn about the night sky in the traditional way. Continue reading →
I’ve always been interested in space and a couple of years ago, my other half bought me a telescope for my birthday. It was a rather left-field sort of present, but she knew it would appeal because firstly, I like space, and secondly it was computer controlled, which would appeal to my inner and outer geek. I had one problem though. I knew nothing about our night sky, short of looking at a few nice pictures from Hubble and documentaries on Discovery. My new scope faced being an expensive, and large, doorstop unless I could figure out a bit more about what was above my head.
Star Walk for iPad – the app that serves as an interactive astronomy guide – was updated yesterday, to Version 5.2. The update is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of human space flight.
New in this latest version are:
• CALENDAR of Celestial Events: plan stargazing without leaving your favorite app • SEARCH through all the categories at once • NEW SKY: true-to-life picture of the skies with glittering stars • AUGMENTED reality • Moon bug fix: now you can track all the Sun eclipses as precise as never before! • Smoother design of control buttons • Bug fix
This is yet another stellar (no pun intended) app that does not rest on its laurels, and keeps adding cool new features.
Solar Walk – 3D Solar System Model is a beautiful and hugely impressive iPad (and iPhone)app. If you have any interest at all in astronomy, or have kids who do, or just like gorgeous apps, you have to give this one a look.
I’ll do a review of it at some point when my daughter and I have had a chance to spend more time with it, but I just had to give it a quick mention, because it is just so impressive.
