Facebook Live Event News: Still no Facebook iPad App

FacebookAppsforiPad

I’ve been watching the Facebook Live event this afternoon, with Mark Zuckerberg talking about some ‘big news’ for Facebook and chat. Built-in video chat via Skype was announced, as many expected.

The other big news from the event is no news on a Facebook iPad app. It didn’t even get a mention, though Zuckerberg did say they’ve been ‘buy building stuff’ for around 6 months now and that over the next few weeks and months they’ve got a number of things to announce and launch.

I’m sure this will disappoint a lot of iPad-owning Facebook fans. Until Facebook does decide to release an official app for iPad, we’ll need to keep using either Facebook in the Safari browser or one of the various 3rd party Facebook apps available in the iPad App Store.

My current – and fairly long-standing – favorite Facebook app for the iPad is Friended. What’s yours?

Friended Facebook App for iPad Updated

FriendedIcon

Friended – the first native Facebook app for the iPad – has been updated this week, to Version 1.2. This is a pretty big update, despite the .x version number, with a number of good new features added. Here’s the full list of what’s new:

-Send messages!
-Greatly improved chat updating/refreshing
-Places check ins
-View, RSVP and create Events/Birthdays
-Pinch and zoom on Photos
-View and add tags to Photos
-Choose/Add album to upload pictures
-Deleting Posts
-Liking comments
-View who likes comments
-In-line, tappable links
-View "People You Might Know"
-Edit Font Size, Facebook Account Settings and Privacy Settings
-Misc bug fixes/optimizations

I updated the app last night and though I haven’t had a chance to try out all the new features yet, the ones I did look good and work well. Friended has been my favorite Facebook app on the iPad for some time now, and recently I’ve found I visit Facebook a lot more often, every day even – just because it’s easy and pleasant to do via the Friended app. That’s saying a lot for the app, because I’ve never been a big Facebook user.

Here’s an App Store link for Friended; it’s priced at $0.99.

Hello.App – Another New Facebook App for iPad

HelloApp

Hello.App – Facebook for iPad (or let’s just call it Hello from here on out) is another brand new Facebook app for the iPad.

It’s very focused on the Facebook news feed, as are most Facebook apps and its App Store description is a bit garbled, so here are some of its key features:

● Quick Status Update
● Super fast Multiple Photos Upload
● A unique Profile Action Wheel
● Bookmarking
● Perfectly sized Videos & Photo view
● Portrait & Landscape viewing

I installed the app earlier and spent just a little time with it. The UI is quite busy, and a little drab for my taste – but then again I don’t find Facebook itself gorgeous to look at. The app seemed solid in just a quick trial run with it, and I’ll keep it around and see how it does with some regular usage.

If you’re after another Facebook app for the iPad, here’s the App Store link for Hello; it’s priced at $2.99.

Friendly Facebook iPad App Updated, Works Again

FriendlyforiPad

Friendly – one of the leading Facebook apps for the iPad – has been updated again this past weekend, to Version 3.5.1. This update is all about fixing issues that appeared after the recent 3.5 update.

Friendly 3.5.1 fixes the startup issue preventing some users to properly start the last update of friendly, or causing "black screen" problem.

The startup issues were apparently caused by changes made at Facebook itself, but regardless of their origin they were making the app virtually unusable. Happily, the app is working fine again now following this latest update.

Here’s an App Store link for Friendly; it’s priced at $0.99.

Friended – First Native Facebook App for the iPad?

Friended Facebook app for iPad

Friended is a new Facebook app for the iPad. Its developers reckon it’s the first truly native Facebook app for iPad. Here’s its App Store intro:

Introducing the world’s first native Facebook iPad app, Friended. Designed from the ground up for the iPad, Friended has all the features of Facebook you know and love, designed into a gorgeous iPad interface.

-News Feeds
-Comments/Likes
-Photo Galleries
-Notifications
-Messages
-Chat
-Groups
-Quick view profile popovers

I’m not a heavy user of Facebook, but I have been using it a lot more just lately – so I gave this app a quick try earlier today. It’s quite nice to use and seems pretty quick at most things. It lets you see a lot of elements at once (e.g. live feed, recently posted pictures, friends, live chat bar with online friends shown etc) – and makes good use of popovers to let you interact with them easily.

Using live chat worked very well, and overall the app looks fast and solid so far – after just a brief trial run.

I think I like the interface of the Friendly app just a little better, but I’m going to use both apps a little more and then share some further thoughts.

Here’s an App Store link for Friended; it’s priced at $0.99.

Facepad – Facebook for iPad App Looks Promising

Facepad - Facebook for iPad

Facepad – Facebook for iPad (let’s just call it Facepad from here on, OK?), as you just might have guessed from the name, is a new Facebook app for the iPad. And it’s quite a promising and good looking one at that.

It definitely has a more glossy and attractive UI than the other well-known Facebook app for the iPad, Friendly. I’ve been trying it out just a little this morning and I’m finding it quite nice to use.

Of course there’s a great opening right now for Facebook apps for the iPad, since there is still no official app from Facebook themselves. I’ve been mostly using their iPhone app at the 2X size on my iPad – but after just a little while with Facepad I think I already prefer it.
