iPad photo effects apps

FXPhotoStudioHDBanner

FX Photo Studio HD for iPad – one of my favorite photo effects apps – has had another major update today, to Version 4.0.

Among the most notable additions in this update are 7 new effects (bringing the total to a massive 194), a new masking studio to apply effects to specific areas of an image, and a new color splash tool.

Here’s more of the change list for version 4.0:

★ Performance improvements – with some filters 2X faster processing
★ Improved editing tools: gamma, saturation, hues, etc
★ Improved in-app camera
★ Possibility to import images from Facebook
★ Instagram sharing
★ Centering for Tilt Shift, Radial Blur effects
★ Printing via Air Print
★ Square crop option
★ Enhanced user interface
★ Restore in-app purchases from inside the app

This is one of the apps I listed in my post on the best photo editing apps for the iPad – and it continues to get regular and substantial updates.

Here’s an App Store link for FX Photo Studio HD; it is currently on sale for $1.99 for four days.

PhotoForge2 – the powerful and versatile photo editing / effects app – has just been updated and has added full support for the iPad. The update, to Version 2.1, makes it a universal app, designed for both the iPad and the iPhone.

I mentioned PhotoForge2 in my recent rundown of the best photo editing apps for iPad, even before this update was released – as I knew it was due soon, and knew the app was a powerhouse that was worthy of making the list.

One of the headline features in PhotoForge2 is support for layers:

Create new layers from any photo or create an empty layer that can be filled with color. Change the layer’s blend mode and opacity, or rotate and transform it. Reorder and change layer visibility with ease. Add a mask to your layer to simply paint away portions you don’t want to see.

The app has a slick UI and a strong range of effects, editing tools, and features. It allows you to save in JPEG, PNG and TIFF. PNG and TIFF formats will maintain any transparency in images. Its export/share options include Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox, Picasa, Tumblr, and FTP.

I’ve only spent a short while with PhotoForge2, but I can already see that it’s a hugely capable app that will get frequent use on my iPad.

Here’s an App Store link for PhotoForge2; it’s priced at $1.99.

This is a really unique and fun app to use. You can adjust effects and edit your images on the fly, and it’s incredibly fun to just swipe in order to move through different preset effects. The app is from highly acclaimed photographer Trey Ratcliff and was already great value at $3.99. At this new 99 cent price it’s a real steal.

iPad2LaunchCollage

Photogene for iPad – one of the best photo editing / photo effects apps for the iPad – has been updated this week, to Version 3.00.

Two of the big new features added in this update are Localized Effects and Collage Maker. Localized Effects is the ability to apply filters or color adjustments by just ‘painting’ them onto specific areas of an image. Collage Maker lets you select 4-6 photos or images and make a collage out of them. You get three standard collage templates to work with, and another six are available to buy via In-App purchase.

The localized effects feature is easy to use and works nicely. The collage maker is also easy to use and lots of fun. I was able to throw together the one used at the top of this post, with photos from the iPad 2 launch day here in Austin, in just a couple minutes.

Quick Hint: You need to allow Photogene for iPad to use your location, via Settings > Location Services, in order for the collage maker to work.
