iPadOS 13 in Action: Text Selection

One of Apple’s subtle, yet extremely useful additions in iPadOS 13 and iOS 13 is their new text selection and editing features. If, like me, you work with text often on an iPad or iPhone, then you will like appreciate how these new capabilities and gestures will speed up your workflow. Let’s get to the details.

App Icons in iPadOS 13- Do You Want Bigger or More?

Developer Beta 5 of IPadOS 13 dropped today and includes a new feature that is worth mentioning. Apple has included a new setting that allows users to determine the amount of icons shown on the screen. While this isn’t a major addition, it is worth noting considering how long Apple left the iPad’s Home Screen alone.

Tips and Tricks: Open a Safari Link in a New Page With a Gesture

Did you know that you could do a two-finger tap on a link in Safari to launch it into a new browser window? If you didn’t, you aren’t alone. I may have heard about this gesture at some point, but like some many little Apple details, it was long gone from my brain before I was reminded of it and its usefulness today.

iPadOS 13 in Action: External Storage Lightning Strikes

While I love several of the new features in iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, the ability to use external storage is one I keep coming back to. It opens up lots of new and interesting possibilities that will make certain tasks easier and may even change the amount of internal storage in the iPads that we buy. As such, I’ve been pushing the limits to see what works and what doesn’t.

Version 3 of the iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 Developer Betas Arrive

A little gift from Apple before the long weekend (here in the US, at least), as their latest Developer Betas for all of their OSs just arrived.   These include iOS 13, iPadOS 13, watchOS 6, tvOS 13 and macOS Catalina. That should give all of us Apple fans (and, you know, actual developers) something to do while we’re munching on BBQ and watermelon and taking in or shooting off some fireworks this 4th of July weekend.

If you’ve been waiting for Apple to release its first Public Beta of iOS and iPadOS before jumping on board, then today is your day. Apple had originally said the Public Beta would come in July, but it has arrived a little ahead of schedule, it seems.

iPadOS 13 in Action: External Storage Support is Hit and Miss So Far

Before I get into this, I want anyone reading to bear in mind that I am talking about beta software in this article and ones to follow. This is not meant to be a review, but more of a changelog for anyone following along. I am definitely not throwing stones at Apple here, as development of iPadOS and iOS are ongoing, but simply relaying my experience with the beta so far.

Apple Betas Take to the Air Again

I was a little worried that Apple was going to make things harder on us this year, with Developer Betas that all required loading restore files to upgrade. They went that route with the first betas for iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, which made testing difficult for me being a Windows user. I was able to get around my lack of a Mac while I was on vacation a couple of weeks ago, but I had little interest in doing it again.

It’s the Little Things: The New Share Sheet In iPadOS

There are a lot of major changes and new features in both iOS and iPadOS 13. However, sometimes it’s the little things that initially go unnoticed that have a big impact on everyday usage. For me, the new redesigned Share Sheet is one of those small but impactful changes that just clears things up a bit and makes a good feature that much better.

Safari in iPadOS is Really Close to a Full Desktop Browser

I’ll start off by saying that I’m not complaining. I really like the revamped Safari in iPadOS 13. It is a smoother and more powerful browser that takes you were you want to go without the extra fuss of requesting desktop sites or the annoyance of still getting a mobile site afterward. It works about 98% of the time in my limited experience. It just isn’t quite all the way to what I get with Firefox or Chrome on my Windows laptop. At least not yet.

Installing the iOS 13 Beta Using a Windows 10 Computer

I feel compelled to add to my post from earlier today, because the instructions in the Redmond Pie article I linked to left something to be desired. I have a feeling they didn’t try them out before they posted it, because they don’t work without some extra steps and considerations. So if you are a Windows user, have an Apple Dev Account and want to give the iOS 13 or iPadOS 13 Beta a go, here is what you need to do.
