The iPhone 8 is Still Selling Surprisingly Well

Remember when the iPhone 8 was released last year? The tech press was universally unimpressed, and most of them predicted mediocre to poor sales. To be honest, I didn’t find it particularly compelling, either. No one can deny that the 8 and 8 Plus’ almost four year old design is dated, at best. A glass back, new gold color, and wireless charging didn’t change that.

This perception was just exacerbated by the fact that the iPhone X is so much more visually appealing than the 8 and 8 Plus, with its glass curves and bezel-less design. How in the world would this older looking phone with a new price tag compete with the the X on one side, and the less expensive, but very similar looking iPhone 7 on the other? This doesn’t even factor in the constantly improving Android flagship phones from Samsung, LG, and Google, themselves. I can’t say I thought the iPhone 8 was destined for great sales numbers.

Apple Releases (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 8, iPhone X Folio Case

In the grand scheme of Apple releases, today’s is merely a blip on the radar. However, the release of the PRODUCT(RED) iPhones 8 and 8 Plus do extend the pattern of mid-year color additions to the iPhone line to a second year. If you recall, Apple released RED versions of the iPhones 7 and 7 Plus around the same time last year.

Analyst Predicts the Fall 2018 iPhone Lineup Price Points

While several reputable Apple prognosticators, including both Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo, have predicted that we will see three new iPhone models in the Fall, now we have a price prediction that I think makes a lot of sense to go with them. Amit Daryanani, an analyst with RBC Capital, has made an interesting prediction about the new price points for the three devices that will replace the current iPhone X.

Apple’s 2017 Hardware in Review: It Was the Year Of…

As we close out 2017 and look forward to a new year just a handful of hours ahead, now is a great time to look back at the year that was. This was a VERY busy year for Apple, so rather than a completely exhaustive review, I’m just going to hit a few of the highlights with Apple’s hardware in 2017.

PSA: Family Members May Be Able to Train Their Way Into Your iPhone X via Face ID

You might want to consider changing your iPhone X passcode to something unique if you want to insure complete control over your new phone around your family. As evidenced by several reports of siblings, half-siblings and other close family members being able to “trick” Face ID, this is the best way to lessen the odds of it happening. Why do you ask? Because knowing the correct passcode to unlock the phone is the key to training Face ID. The X’s neural network that governs Face ID only acknowledges facial input for machine learning upon a failed unlock attempt after a subsequent successful passcode unlock. It also learns any changes to your face over time after successful unlocks. If you are letting someone else you are related to unlock your phone via passcode, there is a possibility that they will be able to train their way into unlocking your X via Face ID if you look enough alike.

Living with the iPhone X- Week 1 Grab Bag

It has now been more than a week since my iPhone X showed up. After some initial hiccups getting the backup from my iPhone 7 Plus restored, it has been pretty smooth sailing. It has been reliable and I haven’t seen any issues with the screen, Face ID, or even the problem related to sensitivity to temperature shifts. I’ve spent time taking about gestures, testing Face ID, and taking pictures up to this point. Today I want to touch on a few random thoughts and observations I’ve had on the X over the course of the week.

Are Apple’s iPhone 8 Production Cuts a Red Flag, or Business as Usual?

I wrote about iPhone 8 sales a few weeks ago, as reports were beginning to infer that the device was performing poorly so close to its launch. There is more grist for the rumor mill this week, as there are reports that Apple has scaled back production by more half. On the surface, this move seems to indicate that the phone is selling well below Apple’s expectations, especially when paired with Reuters’ report that the iPhone 7 is outselling the 8 right now. However, these individual reports still can’t be viewed in a vacuum. Let’s step back from the ledge for a second. and try to put everything in context.

The iPhone 8 Plus Battery Swelling Issue Will Be Interesting to Watch

I’ll be clear right out of the gate- right now the reports of iPhone 8 Plus batteries expanding and cracking phones are statistically insignificant. Whatever anyone thinks of the early sales of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, there are enough of them in the field that five to ten reports of this occurring doesn’t indicate a wide-ranging problem. This is only a brewing story at this point because it’s Apple, and it would be similarly the case if it was Samsung or Google. If this was happening with LG or Huawei phones, would we know right now? Probably not. Continue reading

What Constitutes Success for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus?

There has been no end of discussion about the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus and how boring most of us “tech-types” find them. There are early conjured “sales figures” and anecdotal evidence for and against good sales numbers. There have also been the typical disaster predictions and the hand-wringing over how Apple has apparently lost its way. Just listen to this week’s This Week in Tech podcast for a perfect example.

AirPower- What’s In a Name?

Apple teased its coming wireless charging pad during its iPhone event last week, but we didn’t get too many details. We know that it is compatible with the Qi wireless charging standard, and that Apple has said that they may include compatibility with other Qi-compliant devices. We also know that it will work with the new iPhones 8, 8 Plus, and X, all Apple Watches, and Apple’s AirPods with the new Wireless Charging Case that is coming soon. But that’s about all the news that’s fit to print, for now.
