Prepping for Your iPhone X- Fast Charging and Dealing with Selling Old Hardware

We are down to less than two days left before the iPhone X arrives for those of us fortunate enough to get them on launch day. We’ve already covered the merits of AppleCare+, Cases, and Screen Protectors and dealing with a lack of a headphone jack in preparation for Friday, so the major “extras” are covered. Now is a good time to switch gears and look at some options to enhance your charging experience, as well as options to make some of the $1000+ you just dropped on the X back on some older hardware you may be ready to unload.

Prepping for Your iPhone X- Screen Protection and Headphones

The first wave of iPhone Xs will be here in just three short days. Time is growing short to finish up preparations that require purchases, so let’s take a look at two more areas that some of you will want to address before your X arrives. Screen protectors have been with us since the first iPhone, and with the price of screen replacements only going up (which I touched on in my installment on AppleCare+), they make more sense than ever. As for headphones, earbuds, aux cords, etc, this won’t be a problem for any of you who are coming from an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus. However, the rest of you need to consider the fact that the X will likely be your first phone without a built-in headphone jack. Let’s take a look at some of your options.

Prepping for Your iPhone X- Cases

Yesterday I covered what I feel is the most basic step in the iPhone X purchase process- deciding whether to purchase AppleCare+. For a large number of us, step two will be finding a suitable case. I already mentioned the SaharaCase, which is available from Amazon with Prime shipping, a couple of days ago as a good “starter option” for those who need something to use until they find something more to their liking. Today, I’m going to cover some of the many other options, a few of which will require you to wait a while.

Prepping for Your iPhone X- AppleCare+

So you are getting an iPhone X sometime between November 3rd and the end of December. Congratulations! Now what? Hopefully I can help you with that. I’m running a series this week that will cover some of the basics that you should consider and take care of before your iPhone X arrives, as well as a few items for when you first power it up. It should get you to the point where you are ready to jump straight in and get started with your new device on day one.

SaharaCase Protective Kit Makes a Solid Starter Case for the iPhone X

Have you ever found yourself spending money on a case that you absolutely knew you wouldn’t keep using right when you get a new iPhone? I know I have. In my years as an iPhone user, I have found that there are case people and “naked” people when it comes to smartphone users. Most are one or the other, and from what I know, this usually doesn’t change. You are what you are, I guess. I fall somewhere on the case side, myself.

Some people don’t care what their phones look like or if the screen collects a crack here and there, and others will attempt to encase their phone in carbonite to prevent anything from ever coming into direct contact with the device, including their own fingers. If you fall on the case person side, then you are probably working on getting one for your iPhone X as I type this. I’m with you, as I ordered mine yesterday.

For All of You Still Trying to Preorder the iPhone X, I Salute You

Whew! I am very happy that’s over. I got in with my iPhone using the Apple Store App at about 2:04 AM CST, and thanks to the fact that I used the iPhone Upgrade Program pre-approval, all I had to do was hit two buttons to process my order. That was it. It was definitely the easiest Apple preorder that I’ve done.

Report: Apple Had to Downgrade Face ID Specs to Meet Ship Deadline

So it looks like Bloomberg has a pretty big scoop on the iPhone X production troubles here. Normally I would take a story like this with a big grain of salt. However, Bloomberg is a pretty solid source for Apple news, even though the company has waged a war of secrecy against them recently. They still have their sources, and don’t tend to just run with wild rumors like many other media outlet, so there is a high likelihood that this report is as least partially accurate. Also, I have to give Alex Webb and Sarah Kim of Bloomberg credit- this is a well-written and balanced article that provides a lot of insight into the entire situation. There are a lot of good details, and I highly recommend reading the whole thing. This is definitely not just a click-bait Apple hit piece. Kudos to the authors for that.

Apple is Making the iPhone X Available In-Store on Nov 3

Apple is turning back the clock to the days of the Launch Day Lineup

With a sneaky little press release this morning, Apple has shaken up the iPhone X preorder process again. After already bending it somewhat in favor of existing iPhone Upgrade Plan customers, the company has decided to make the iPhone X available in its stores on launch day, as well. This should go smoothly. Stores open at 8 AM local time according to the press release. I especially like the line that encourages walk-in customers to arrive early. I think some people will take that to mean this afternoon.

Are Apple’s iPhone 8 Production Cuts a Red Flag, or Business as Usual?

I wrote about iPhone 8 sales a few weeks ago, as reports were beginning to infer that the device was performing poorly so close to its launch. There is more grist for the rumor mill this week, as there are reports that Apple has scaled back production by more half. On the surface, this move seems to indicate that the phone is selling well below Apple’s expectations, especially when paired with Reuters’ report that the iPhone 7 is outselling the 8 right now. However, these individual reports still can’t be viewed in a vacuum. Let’s step back from the ledge for a second. and try to put everything in context.

It’s Time for Apple to Revamp the Preorder Process

Let me rephrase that- it’s PAST time for Apple to revamp their arcane preorder system. Apple asking people to wake up between midnight and 3 AM (depending on where they live) and fight their way into the queue to get the latest gear within a month or two of launch has just gotten more and more ridiculous as time has gone by. When the iPhone went on sale over ten years ago, people went and camped out and stood in long lines at Apple Stores, carrier locations, and other retailers to get their hands on one early. However, Apple gradually did away with the mass lineups using the preorder process. Now we have ample evidence that this system, at least as it is currently implemented, has also reached its logical limits.

What Constitutes Success for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus?

There has been no end of discussion about the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus and how boring most of us “tech-types” find them. There are early conjured “sales figures” and anecdotal evidence for and against good sales numbers. There have also been the typical disaster predictions and the hand-wringing over how Apple has apparently lost its way. Just listen to this week’s This Week in Tech podcast for a perfect example.
