iPad iWork Apps Updated with New Document Management Features – Create Folders and More

Boy this week is proving to be big fun, as more and iCloud and iOS 5 features creep onto the iPad and iOS 4.3.

This afternoon I noticed an update (a few days old) to the iPad (and iPhone) iWork apps, Keynote, Numbers, and Pages. They were all updated at the end of May to Version 1.4. Here’s the line in the changes list that caught my eye:

New document manager to easily sort your documents and organize them into folders

All three apps now show your existing documents in a better, bigger area. More importantly you can now create folders within each app’s set of docs, by dragging them onto each other just as you do with apps. There are also new options when choosing to create a new document – the ability to open one directly from iTunes, iDisk, or WebDAV sources. Very nice.

You can also choose whether docs are sorted by name or by date.

OK, this is a still a long way from full access to the file system, but it’s a heck of a lot nicer looking and nicer to work with than what we had before this update.

Keynote, Numbers, Pages iPad Apps Updated – Now Universal, Work on iPhone Too

Yesterday Apple updated its three-app iWork suite for iOS – Keynote, Numbers, and Pages were all upgraded to universal apps, designed to run on iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. Each of the apps was updated to Version 1.4 to incorporate the upgrade.

The best thing about this change is that not only are these three stellar apps now available on the iPhone, but the price of all three has remained the same, at $9.99 each. That’s great value for each of these as a universal app for both iPad and iPhone, and a very cool move on Apple’s part considering that all three have consistently been top sellers in the iPad App Store and they easily could have priced these at $5 a pop as separate iPhone apps.

If you’re not familiar with the iWork suite for iOS, these were originally designed as Mac alternatives to the three core MS Office products. Pages is a word processor app, Numbers does spreadsheets, and Keynote is a Powerpoint equivalent that does slide presentations. They’re very good apps on the Mac and great apps on the iPad. Keynote is spectacularly great on the iPad, one of the very, very best iPad apps of all.

It’s great to see these apps made universal and kept at such a reasonable price. Here are links to check them out in the App Store:

Keynote for iPad  Numbers for iPad  Pages for iPad

The iWork suite of apps for the iPadKeynote, Numbers, and Pages – got a major update last night.

The biggest new additions are the ability to export in Office file formats – .ppt for Keynote, .xls for Numbers, and .doc for Pages – and support for MobileMe iDisk.  So you can now export documents from these iWork apps in formats that should be friendly for anyone using MS Office, and you can copy your documents to iDisk if you have a MobileMe account.
