Best Free iPad App of the Week: Skype for iPad

SkypeforiPadVideoCall

Who doesn’t like free? And who doesn’t like great iPad apps? When the two come together it’s good stuff. With that in mind, we’d like to share our Best Free iPad App of the Week here every weekend.

Our pick for this week is Skype for iPad, the excellent and popular VOIP app for free calling and video calling to other Skype users.

It took Skype a while to release an iPad app but once they did it was worth the wait. I actually like the Skype iPad app better than the Mac app.

The iPad app works with a WiFi or 3G connection and lets you send and receive video from the iPad 2’s front and back cameras. Here are a few of its other notable features:

• Talk face-to-face or show what you’re seeing with front and back-facing cameras.
• Use Skype for iPad to call anyone else on Skype – and enjoy near CD quality (SILK) sound.
• Instant message and add emoticons to personalize your messages.

Skype for iPad Updated – Adds Bluetooth Hands-free Support

SkypeforiPadIcon

Skype for iPad has been updated this week, to Version 3.5.84.

The big new feature that this update brings is Bluetooth support for the iPad 2 – so you can do hands-free Skype calling.

Another notable addition, which some will not be fond of, is the addition of advertising for users who do not have Skype Credit, a calling subscription or premium subscription. Personally, given how good this free app and service have been for me over the years, I have zero objection to them running a few ads.

It’s great to see the Bluetooth support added and I’ve found Skype for iPad to be an impressive app overall.

Skype for iPad Released, Looks Good

SkypeforiPadVideoCall

Skype for iPad has been released on the iPad App Store today.

The much awaited iPad version of the hugely popular VOIP app is a free app and works over WiFi and 3G. It requires iOS 4.0 or above, and lets you send and receive video using the front or back camera on iPad 2, iPhone 4, and iPod Touch 4th gen. Here are some of its key features:

• Talk face-to-face or show what you’re seeing with front and back-facing cameras.
• Use Skype for iPad to call anyone else on Skype – and enjoy near CD quality (SILK) sound.
• Instant message and add emoticons to personalize your messages.

I’ve given it a very quick test run this morning with my friend Larry Greenberg from RunaroundTech. It looks good and has some nice little features. One that immediately caught our eye was the ability to have a text chat while on a video call. It’s easy to swap between front and back cameras with just a couple of taps. And the UI, though still quite basic, is just a little nicer than on other versions of Skype.

I’m very happy to see Skype for iPad – I’m a pretty frequent user of Skype and of course this is immediately a much better app than FaceTime because it’s cross-platform and you can reach tons more people through it.

Where’s Skype for iPad?

SkypeoniPad

About a month ago I posted on reports from CNET and elsewhere that the Skype for iPad app was due out very soon, within just days was the expectation.

Now it’s a month later and there’s still no Skype for iPad in the App Store. I wonder what the holdup is. Maybe Apple rejected it and Skype need to make some changes, or perhaps some bugs were discovered at the last minute and Skype themselves postponed the release.

Whatever the cause of the delay, it would be great to see it resolved and see Skype’s iPad version hit the App Store. Because of its cross-platform support, Skype is still a far more useful app than FaceTime. Soon it may have some stiff competition though – if Google+ releases an iPad app with the popular Hangout feature enabled.

Skype for iPad Coming Very Soon, with Video Chat

SkypeforiPad

It looks like we should finally be seeing a Skype for iPad app, with a video chat feature, very soon. This has been one of the big name apps missing from the iPad App Store ever since the iPad launched. There is an iPhone version that runs on the iPad, but of course it has to be used in the rather lame 2X mode because it’s not designed specifically for the iPad.

So the release of the Skype iPad app should be exciting stuff. If it’s a solid app, it will be a better option than Apple’s FaceTime in many ways. For starters, it’s got proper cross-platform support – so you can talk to anyone via Skype, not just other Mac and iOS device users.

News of the app’s impending release comes via CNET and many others this weekend. CNET got a sneak peek at a pre-release version of the app, and they expect it to be released as soon as next Tuesday (June 28). There has also been a leaked video of the app and confirmation from a Skype exec that the app is coming soon.

The Skype iPad version is expected to have similar capabilities to those of the iPhone app – including audio and video calling and chat. Not surprisingly, it will not have the file sharing abilities that desktop versions have.

I use Skype often, on both my Mac and iOS devices, so needless to say I’m very keen to see the new iPad version.
