Here’s our fourth post in the What’s on Your iPad series, which I’m aiming to make a regular feature here. I’m always interested to see how others are using their iPads, and I’m seeing that a lot of you are too.
Today it’s a pleasure to have my writing colleague, Alicia Bankhofer, as the subject. Here’s a little about Alicia:
Born and bred in Trinidad and Tobago, Alicia Bankhofer currently resides near Vienna, Austria with her husband Andy, her cat Angel and her iDevices: Indiepod, Indiephone, Indiepad and Indiebook (black Macbook).
A late-blooming geek, her first all-consuming gadget was a third generation iPod, leading her to a rewarding stint as moderator and contributing editor on iLounge.com, blogger for iSource.com and later to a passion as a singer for a rock band, Slave called shiver, which she co-founded in 2006. With her pop project Alibee she explores her softer latin musical side and delves into her Caribbean roots.
Currently passionate about Apple, web, tech, gadgets, iPhoneography and mobile.
Here we go – questions are in italics with a grey background, Alicia’s answers are in block quotes:
Which iPad model do you use? (original or iPad 2, WiFi or WiFi + 3G, storage size) Any particular reasons for choosing this model?
I use an iPad 2 16GB model in sexy white, chosen for for obvious aesthetic reasons.
Do you use any sort of case with the iPad? If so, which one/s and why?
My iPad is currently rocking a Switcheasy Trig case in grey. It looks great and protects the iPad well. I also use a sticker for the back of the iPad from Infectious so that I can place the iPad on a table without worrying about scratches.
I have these apps in the dock – Safari, Calendar, Mail, Facebook, Twitter and Skype.
But these are actually are not really my frequently used – except for the 1st 4 apps.
What are some of your other most-used apps / what’s on your first home screen? (and any reasons why you’d like to offer)
My most used are (apart from Safari, Cal, Mail and Facebook) Messages, NewsRack, Zite, Flipboard and iSilo and iAnnotate. Oh, and my current obsession: Words with Friends.
How do you arrange your home screens? Do you use folders at all / heavily?
After Spring Cleaning I decided to go for a single screen iPad – I have all apps except for Newsstand in folders. Jealous? :-)
I deleted all the huge apps that were taking up lots of space and also those I tried out once or twice but would never use.
Now my look is quite minimalistic and I plan to keep it that way.
What are some of your most used productivity apps on the iPad? Any that you use for work?
Hmm, do these count as productivity apps? Reminders, Clear, Dropbox and Evernote
Do you read any newspaper or magazine apps on the iPad? Do you subscribe to any?
I don’t subscribe to any but I have downloaded a few freebies in my time. Yearly or monthly subscriptions to mags or newspapers would be very expensive for me. If money were no object I’d get "National Geographic", "Reader’s Digest", "New Yorker" or "the Economist" due to the content that would be of interest to me. At the moment I feel we are at the dawn of the electronic media age and publishers are only now getting their act together and not yet offering truly engaging content packaged in an innovative way.
How much, if any, book reading do you do on the iPad?
I do loads of book reading the iPad – mostly in the Kindle app as I use iBooks more for pdfs. The Kindle app reading experience is a joy. I love bookmarking and looking up words I don’t know.
I "fill" my time usually by reading my news feeds via NewsRack and general browsing through sites or twitter. And of course I cannot escape playing Words with Friends every day with my mummy and sister who are in faraway Trinidad. I am usually playing several games with several people simultaneously.
Have you got a ‘hidden gem’ type iPad app that more people should know about?
Gosh there are so many. Garageband is a serious machine. Really. Unbelievable that it only costs €5. Nota is another great app for creating music. I recently discovered LogMeIn which allws remote access to desktop from iPad. Words as advertised. And the biggest wow effect I had was using the Remote app for iPhone together with Keynote on iPad. You open the apps and they just bloody work. Seamlessly.
Any killer apps you think are missing from the iPad App Store, apps you’d love to see come to the iPad?
I’d love to see Instagram on the iPad. I love it so much that I have the iPhone version on the iPad. Whats App would also be great for iPad.
Do you tend to pay much attention to your home or lock screen wallpaper? Change it up often?
Nope. Don’t change this at all. I have one wallpaper that is my absolute fave ever since I saw it first. It’s Eva Mendes in The Spirit. I guess it oozes a sense of coolness in an urban modern woman, which I hope I am :-)
Big, big thanks to Alicia for doing this post with me. I’m very impressed with her folders and her single home screen approach.
I’m hoping we’ll make this a regular weekly or bi-weekly feature on Wednesdays now – so look out for more What’s on Your iPad posts soon.
