As expected before an Apple event, the leaks are coming faster now and we’re starting to get a good idea what’s coming this month. According to Jon Prosser a few days ago, that would be the new iPad Pros, AirTags, Apple TV, and you guessed it, updated AirPods. Today’s leak from close to the supply chain paints a familiar picture.
The new photo above looks almost exactly like the one I reported on a couple of weeks ago from 52audio.
That’s usually a good sign that the leaks refer to something real. It may not always be a product that gets released, but it’s at least something that’s been worked on or prototyped by Apple. In this case, with two leaks of the same thing so close to an event, it looks to me like Jon Prosser was right and these two other leakers are also on the money. If you are in the market for some AirPods, the smart money says to hold off for a couple of weeks. If nothing else, you can get a great deal on the current models on closeout.
As for the potential AirPods 3 design, count me as a fan. While I still use my AirPods Pro on a daily basis, there are tasks I don’t prefer them for. When it comes to the work day, I tend to return to my AirPods 2. I like to be able to hear what’s going on around me and the AirPods Pro’s Transparency Mode isn’t enough. I use a single AirPods in one ear for taking calls and rotate them through the day as battery life demands.
Part of the reason the AirPods work better for me in these situations is because they don’t have the rubber tips that create a tighter seal in your ears. Looking at these AirPods 3 leaks, they are just about perfect for me. I prefer the shorter, Pro-like overall design to the longer stems of the original and 2nd gen AirPods. A new pair of Apple wireless earbuds with that design and no silicon tips has me interested.
I’m not sure I will buy the AirPods 3 being that I have the AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro as it is, However, if this is the final design, I can’t lie. I will be tempted to at least try them out.
What do you think of this new potential AirPods 3 design? Are you interested enough to buy? Would you pass up the Pros for this updated design if the price stays the same? Let me know in the Comments section below or on Twitter @iPadInsightBlog.
