One of the best things about using an iPad is all the great apps that we can run on it. There are excellent apps for just about any purpose you can think of. Better still, there are lots of great free apps for the iPad. Our Best Free iPad App of the Week posts highlight these apps.
This week’s pick is UPS for iPad, which provides a number of resources for managing UPS package delivery and using their services. Here’s a bit of its App Store description:
The UPS for iPad app lets you easily manage your deliveries by tracking, nicknaming shipments, and viewing your package’s progress on a map. You can also quickly find UPS service locations via GPS. Need to reroute or reschedule a delivery? No problem! For UPS My Choice members, this app provides the flexibility to reschedule, redirect, or authorize shipment release so that UPS can leave packages when you won’t be home to sign in person.
When first opened the app prompts you to login if you have a UPS account. Logging in is recommended, though not required. I’ve never had an account but chose to register free for one within the app. It requires name, email address, username, a strong password, and agreeing to a fairly lengthy user agreement.
If you choose to register / login you can:
– Sync your recent tracks from ups.com
– Nickname tracked shipments
– Enroll in UPS My Choice
– Use UPS My Choice to take action on your incoming deliveries
– Set your delivery preferences
Seeing some of this, I sort of wish I had though about creating a UPS account sooner. Once I did create an account I also chose to register for UPS My Choice (again for free) which lets you control a number of handy options for UPS package delivery – things like delivery alerts options (email, phone, SMS) leading up to and on the day of delivery, entering security codes needed to gain access to your residence and upcoming vacation times, and more.
If you choose not to login you can still do the following:
– Track packages and freight shipments
– Save up to 5 tracking numbers in your tracking list
– See the current location of your package on a map
– Find UPS service locations via GPS
And of course the app gives you a good guide to nearby UPS locations – with map, address, and phone details.
Obviously the UPS for iPad app is not likely to be a most frequently used type app for most of us; but it looks very useful for those times when we’re waiting on a package. And especially for that final delivery day when we’re waiting for a shiny new gadget.
