The winners of the 2010 Best App Ever Awards have been announced.
The overall winner – Angry Birds – is no great shocker, but the list of winners across 33 categories (with iPad and iPhone division winners in each) is impressive as always.
I’m a big fan of the Best App Ever Awards. The motto and philosophy of the awards is this:
Honor the best, not just the best selling
This year an astounding 496,000 votes were cast for apps by users around the world – and produced a winners list that lives up to the goal and includes a lot of apps that are not the usual suspects coming away with awards. Here are some notable winners in the iPad division:
— Flipboard won three awards – more than any iPad app – for Most Innovative App, Best Visual Design, and Best News App. All well deserved I’d say.
— iBooks is, surprisingly, the only Apple app to get a win. It won the Best eBook App in both the iPad and iPhone divisions. I’m amazed that none of the iWork suite for iPad apps managed an award.
— ToDo for iPad is the winner for Best Productivity App.
— Instapaper grabbed Best Publication App – odd category for it to win in, but a well deserving winner.
— The much-hyped Infinity Blade won for Best Action game.
— Two winners that I’d never even heard of that look awfully good to me are these:
Stack the States won the Best Kids App. This is one I’ll be trying out very soon with my daughter.
Filterstorm won for Best Photography App. This looks like a very powerful photo editing app, with a ton of features.
Both strike me as exactly the sort of app that is intended to be highlighted by these awards.
Next week the awards site will be running a huge promo codes contest, with codes for all of the winning apps up for grabs. All the more incentive to go see details on all the winners and to be sure to check in to the site again next week:
