Brydge 12.9 Max+ with iPad Pro

First Look: Brydge 12.9 Max+ Wireless Keyboard Case with Trackpad

Brydge 12.9 Max+ Box

A few months ago I got an email saying that Brydge was working on a new firmware that would bring multitouch to their Pro+ keyboard case’s trackpad and  I got really excited. All of the sudden, this accessory that I had completely given up on was back in the game with a fully functional trackpad. The beta firmware was impressive and gave Brydge’s first iPad Pro keyboard with trackpad a whole new lease on life.

A few weeks later, I saw even better news from Brydge. They announced that they were coming out with a new keyboard case for 12.9” iPad Pros (including the new, slightly thicker 2021 version) that was very different than their previous models. It was the 12.9 Max+ Wireless Keyboard Case with Trackpad, and it looked like a legitimate competitor to Apple’s Magic Keyboard.

New Third Party Keyboard Cases With Trackpads Are Showing Up for the iPad Pro

Keyboard cases used to be one of the most popular third party accessory categories for Apple tablets. From 2011 to 2017, this was a booming field with several companies like Belkin, Logitech and ZAGG offering strong alternatives for all models of iPad.

However, they haven’t taken off quite the same way for the iPad Pro, as Apple introduced the Smart Connector and its own keyboard product in the Smart Keyboard. There were at least a few third party options for the first two generations of the iPad Pro, but new models became scarce after Apple’s major redesign came in 2018. Other than a couple of options from Logitech and Brydge, the well seemed to dry up for newer iPad Pros.

Brydge’s Beta Firmware Breathes New Life Into Their Pro+ Keyboard

Brydge Pro+ Keyboard

While we were on vacation this week, I started testing out the Brydge Pro+ Keyboard. Again. Due to lack of updates, I eventually gave up on the first one I bought and it ended up in a drawer. I had high hopes when it was announced, but that was before Apple released its official trackpad support and Magic Keyboard last spring.

A Week After I Gave Up on Brydge and Their Pro+ Keyboard, They Finally Start Moving Forward Again

Brydge Pro+ Keyboard

A few weeks ago, I was looking through some of my older devices and accessories and decided to clean house a bit. Anything I didn’t need was either offered up here for the cost of shipping, or on eBay. My Brydge Pro+ has been collecting dust for several months now, so it definitely made the list.

Brydge Updates the Pro+ Firmware Again: It’s Getting Better Slowly

Brydge Pro+

So I’ll give Brydge credit for one thing. They are working really fast to try to get the Pro+’s trackpad working better. They shipped their second firmware update for the device today, courtesy of their free Brydge Connect app. If you have a Pro+, just update the app in the App Store, run it with your Pro+ plugged into a power supply and run the update.

Brydge Released a New Firmware for the Pro+ Today But Still Has Work To Do

Brydge Pro+

I got an email from Brydge this afternoon letting me know that they had just released a new firmware update for their new Pro+ Keyboard and Trackpad. The update came in the form of an iPad app that connects to the Pro+ via Bluetooth and is very easy to use. I did have to plug my keyboard in to run the update, but that was the only minor hassle.

The Brydge Pro+ Bluetooth Keyboard with Trackpad Arrives

Brydge Pro+ in boxWhile all eyes, including my own, have been focused on Apple’s Magic Keyboard, Brydge has been starting to ship their new Pro+ Bluetooth Keyboard and Trackpad. While it was announced and preorders opened before iPadOS 13.4 and the Magic Keyboard were unveiled, Apple still beat them to market, putting them at a bit of a disadvantage. That’s the game, I guess.

Apple’s New Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro Shakes Things Up

I have wanted Apple to go all out and give us their version of a standard laptop keyboard for the iPad Pro for a while now. Even if you like the Smart Keyboard and Smart Keyboard Folio, they aren’t what I’m talking about. Those were thin, light and mobile at the expense of all else. You know, things like backlit keys. Or a key mechanism. ANY key mechanism at all.

Brydge is Releasing a New iPad Pro Keyboard with Trackpad

I love a good, creative Kickstarter or Indiegogo story, but I love it even more when an accessory maker with the chops to really deliver goes all out and brings something unique to the table. Brydge has been a step ahead of the pack when it comes to high quality keyboards for the iPad Pro for a couple of years and now they are pushing the limits even further. Their new Brydge Pro+ will be the first iPad Pro keyboard case from an established manufacturer to include a built-in trackpad.

The Brydge Pro is the Best iPad Keyboard I’ve Ever Used

I’ve heard about the Brydge Keyboard for the iPad for years and seen the glowing reviews. However, I have typically stuck with products from ZAGG and Logitech, as they tend to be a little less expensive and provide more coverage as cases. The main thing that kept me from trying the more expensive Brydge was the fact that it was much more keyboard than case, leaving the back of the iPad completely exposed. The other cases I tried had very good keyboards and provided excellent protection, making them better overall choices for me at the time.
