New Jailbreak Tweak Brings Windowed Apps to iPad

Quasar Jailbreak Window Manager for iPad

Quasar is a new jailbreak tweak – by Pedro Franceschi – that lets you run apps in windows on the iPad. It’s a window manager tweak that appears to offer something much more like real multitasking on the iPad.

Quasar is a tweak that allows you to run your apps in windows in your iPad. Just like in a window-based operating system, you can resize, move, close or full-screen windows.

There’s a video demo of the tweak (which I could not get to embed properly) which looks quite impressive.

Quasar is available now in the Cydia jailbreak app store, priced at $9.99.

It’s been a long while since anything left me even mildly tempted to jailbreak my iPad – and as good as this tweak looks, I’m still not there yet. Though I have to admit I’m thinking about possibly testing it on the iPad 2 that my wife uses.

If any of you have tried this out, please tell us what you think of it in the comments.

First Untethered Jailbreak for iPad 2 Out Now

Absinthe Jailbreak

Today’s a big day for those who have been wanting a way to jailbreak the iPad 2. A new (and long awaited) jailbreak for the iPad 2 has been released by the Chronic Dev Team.

The new jailbreak is called Absinthe – a very cool name I think. The Chronic Dev Team servers are slaughtered so far today, so if you want to get your iPad 2 jailbreak going right away I suggest you visit our friends at iDownload Blog. They’ve got download links that are working nicely and a short, easy guide to applying the jailbreak here: http://bit.ly/wThWXZ

I honestly feel very little temptation to jailbreak my iPad 2 just now. Maybe I’ll waver when I hear about all the latest tweaks. If you end up jailbreaking your iPad 2 this weekend please tell us about your experience in the comments.

Bored with iPad Jailbreak – My iPad 2 Is Restored to Stock

I had been running my iPad 2 jailbroken for the last few weeks, since soon after the first jailbreak for it became available. Last night I restored it to stock and iOS 4.3.5.

I’ve been jailbreaking my iOS devices since way back in the 1.x days of the iPhone OS, but on the iPad in particular I’ve just found myself with less and less temptation to jailbreak. Partly because I find the iPad to be a near-perfect mobile device, partly because iOS has continued to improve and add superb new features, and partly due to the fact that I find fewer and fewer jailbreak apps and tweaks that appeal to me for the iPad.

This most recent time round with the iPad 2 jailbroken I installed a couple old favorites and browsed around for more. I tried out a few new and featured apps and tweaks, but honestly nothing really grabbed me. I still absolutely believe that jailbreak is useful and that the jailbreak community is doing great things – often things that later cross over to iOS and the App Store.

iUsers – Jailbreak App to Create User Accounts on the iPad, Not Looking Safe or Ready for Prime Time

iUsers is a new jailbreak app for the iPad, that offers to let you create separate user accounts, so if you share an iPad, different users can login with different accounts. I’ve been testing it out this morning and unfortunately it does not look at all safe to use if you have a large number of apps

Prior to installing this app, I had over 200 apps installed – which occupied approximately 10GB of space for their program files and data – and around 17GB of free space on my 64GB iPad 2. After using the app to create a user account for myself (as an admin) and one other for my labrador (non-admin) here’s some of the unpleasant results I’ve seen:

— As you may be able to see in the screencap above, my iPad 2 has gone from 17GB free to less than zero space free. It is marked as ‘Over Capacity’ by nearly 5GB, with a whopping 22GB of ‘Other’ content and the size of my Apps storage roughly doubled. And of course as you would expect with any computing device operating with zero space free, the iPad 2 is behaving like a drunken, belligerent, erratic device – with numerous issues. I believe this is due to this portion of how the app works, per its developer Pedro Franceshi:

The system works by making copies of files Filesystem iOS, and some internal modifications of the system to maintain internal data and native applications downloaded from the App Store.

iPad 2 Jailbreak Coming Soon?

If you’ve been anxiously awaiting the ability to jailbreak your iPad 2, you may not have much longer to wait. According to a tweet last week from @p0sixninja, a member of the Chronic Dev team, they were already working on finishing the jailbreak for the iPad 2.

I wonder if they’ll now wait a little to see whether the expected iOS 4.3.2 update has any security measures they’ll need to address to ensure it too is jailbreakable.

I have flip-flopped plenty in the past in my levels of temptation to jailbreak my iDevices – mostly choosing to jailbreak my iPhones, and not so often my iPads. Right now I feel very little desire to jailbreak my iPad 2 – though I may become tempted if the only good wireless mirroring solutions are via jailbreak apps.

How about you all – are you keen to jailbreak your iPad 2?

iPad Rooted Already – Jailbreak Coming

Ha! Day 2 of the iPad and it’s been rooted – as the video posted by MuscleNerd (from the iPhone Dev Team) clearly shows.  I love the bit at the end where he shuts the Maps app down. This comment on the video is very good to see:

Very early work on porting "Spirit" jailbreak by @comex to iPad

As was his tweet on this a few minutes ago:

Here’s to being able to say this phrase soon:

The iPad: Magical, Revolutionary, and Jailbroken.

Is There Already a Jailbreak for the iPad?

Geohot – the boy wonder of the iPhone jailbreak an unlock community and creator of the popular blackra1n jailbreak method – has posted a video demo of a new untethered jailbreak (i.e one with no need to re-jaibreak after each reboot) that will work on all latest model iPhone and iPod Touches.

Here’s the very exciting part in relation to the iPad though:

The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models(ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too.

Geohot thinks this latest jailbreak will probably work for the iPad too.  Obviously that is no guarantee, but for as long as I can remember following Geohot’s efforts, he doesn’t make a lot of empty boasts.  He seems be able to walk the walk far more often than not.

No word on a possible release date for this new jailbreak yet, but how sweet would that be to see the iPad jailbroken on Day 1?
