I finally got round to installing iOS 4.3 Beta 2 on my daughter’s iPad (which is also used for a bit of testing) yesterday. I’d been dying to play around with the new multitasking gestures that it includes – and now I’ve had a chance to and I thought I’d share just a few quick thoughts on these and what I’ve seen in the beta so far.
In these betas for 4.3 you can turn the new multitasking gestures off or on via the Settings app, as shown above. The new gestures are as follows:
Use four or five fingers to: Pinch to the Home screen, Swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar, and Swipe left or right to move between running apps.
Apple has let developers know that those funky new multitasking gestures we’ve seen in the iOS 4.3 beta will not remain in the final public release of 4.3.
This feature will not be enabled in iOS 4.3 for customers, but [Apple is] providing this preview to gather input on how these gestures work with [developer’s] apps.
I know many users will be disappointed to hear this and my initial reaction was to feel that way as well. Having thought about it just a bit, I’m now glad to hear this though. Letting developers have a good, long while to experiment with these new gestures should help determine how useful they really are, how easy (or not) they are to use, and how they may interfere with the operation of 3rd party apps. Hopefully this will just make them better if and when they do come to iOS.
